For Le Duff, Growth is All the Rage

Only a little more than a month into 2013, Le Duff America—the world’s second-largest restaurant company in the bakery café segment, with brands like Bruegger’s Bagels and la Madeleine Country French Café in its portfolio—can already tell it’s going to be a big year.

For starters, it recently purchased casual-dining chain Mimi’s Cafe from Bob Evans for $50 million. It also plans to begin franchising the growing la Madeleine brand, and is expanding Bruegger’s presence with both traditional and nontraditional unit openings.

Bob Evans Farms announced it had entered into a definitive agreement for the sale of its Mimi's Cafe restaurant chain to LeDuff America (LDA).   

Mimi's Cafe is a French-inspired casual-dining restaurant with 145 locations in 24 states, primarily in the West and Southwest. It recently launched a new store-within-a-store concept that adds a quick-service component to its offerings. 

La Madeleine Sweetens the Deal with Holiday Desserts

This holiday season, la Madeleine Country French Café is making it easy to find the perfect hostess gift or stocking stuffer and is bringing back favorite holiday sweet treats.

Every Monday and Tuesday throughout December, la Madeleine invites guests to start their week sweet by enjoying a free holiday mini dessert or cup of coffee with the purchase of an entrée.

La Madeleine Welcomes the Holidays with Seasonal Menu

In the spirit of holiday traditions, la Madeleine Country French Café brought back its holiday menu to cafés on Wednesday, October 31.

Guests can seek comfort in the familiar flavors of the French café’s Turkey Risotto, Turkey Cranberry Melt, and classic turkey and ham sampler dinners.

The return of la Madeleine’s turkey and ham take-home feasts make it easy to enjoy the good company of family and friends gathered around the table this holiday season.

La Madeleine Soars with Premier Airport Location

On July 28, la Madeleine Country French Café will open the doors to its new café at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The Phoenix café is la Madeleine’s first licensed location at a nontraditional venue.

Le Duff America Appoints Jim Vinz to Co-CEO

Le Duff America Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer, Claude Bergeron, announced the appointment of restaurant and hospitality industry veteran Jim Vinz as Co-CEO of Le Duff America, the North American management company of café brands that include la Madeleine Country French Café, Bruegger’s Bagels, Timothy’s World Coffee, and Brioche Dorée.

When the federal menu-labeling law goes into effect this year, restaurants with 20 or more locations will need to provide calorie counts on menus and menuboards. Experts say the calorie shuffle presents a good opportunity for restaurants to reevaluate their menu strategy and menuboard design, two elements that, if done right, should soften any blow from the labeling mandate.

Some operators are uncertain of the consequences of the menu-labeling law. Many fear that customers, when presented with a 900-calorie sandwich on the menu, might suddenly lose their appetite for fast food.
