The Kids’ Meal Compromise

Recently I was talking with Barry Klein, an old friend of mine who was one of the original advertising guys at McDonald’s. He is a marketing consultant now with a large interest in kids marketing. We were discussing the kids’ meal situation and the critics who claim these meals are responsible for our childhood obesity problems.

Barry has a heated position that I would like to share with you, and then I’ll share my comments as well.

Barry: Restaurant operators, which way will you go?

McDonald’s to Phase Out Gestation Stalls for Pigs

McDonald's Hosts Flavor Battle National DJ Competition

A panel of celebrity DJ judges last night crowned San Francisco-based DJ Risk One as the 2012 Flavor Battle Champion.

The 2012 McDonald's Flavor Battle DJ competition finale event took place at the Miami Beach nightclub Cameo, where three DJs each representing a McDonald's burger took to the turntables in a battle of burgers and beats to win the $10,000 grand prize and championship.

How PR Can Save the Day

It occurred to me recently that we are all just trying to have a nice life, build a good business, and make enough bucks to be comfortable. Most of us try to do good things for the communities we work in. But sometimes what we attempt to do doesn’t always work out because we make mistakes, or worse, it all goes out of control through no fault of our own.

Drive Incremental Sales with Drinks

McDonald’s signs boast about the incredible number of hamburgers—now many billions—it’s served over the years. But with the customer clamor for specialty beverages growing louder, the fast food icon may one day brag about the number of peppermint mochas sold.

When McDonald’s launched the McCafé line in 2009, it was both a warning signal to Starbucks and a resounding affirmation that specialty beverage menus would be a fixture at quick serves all over the country.

And signs are pointing to beverages becoming even more important to menus in coming years.

New Products, Store Changes to Drive McDonald’s in 2012

McDonald's experienced big sales gains in 2011, and company officials announced during an earnings call that the brand will use new products and store enhancements to build on that growth in 2012.

McDonald’s global comparable sales were up 5.6 percent in 2011 over 2010, with positive comparable sales across all geographic segments for every quarter. Fourth-quarter results were even stronger, as global comparable sales were up 7.5 percent and U.S. comparable sales were up 7.1 percent.

Consolidated revenues were up 12 percent in 2011 to a record $27 billion.
