PizzaRev Gears Up for Burbank Opening

PizzaRev, a Los Angeles–based custom pizza concept, completed construction on its sixth location and is set to open in Burbank, California, Thursday, December 12. With the recent installation of PizzaRev’s custom-built 9,600 pound stone-bed “Fire-Deck” oven, guests in Burbank will soon create their own pizza and have it served to them in less than three minutes.

Flavors of the World

Although most restaurants will change ingredients in an entrée to meet a guest’s request, a growing number of pizza and ethnic eateries are letting diners build their own menu items from scratch.

“It’s a system that delicatessens and street-food vendors worldwide have used for years. For many consumers, the concept of having restaurant staff assemble fresh, high-quality food in front of you to your design has great appeal,” says Darren Tristano, executive vice president of Chicago-based market research firm Technomic Inc.

“We will continue to rapidly expand our corporate stores, and we are excited now to offer others the opportunity to participate in the PizzaRev story,” says PizzaRev co-CEO Rodney Eckerman. “We have been steadfastly focused on honing our model for the past year, and now are positioned to achieve our long-term goals while satisfying the high-quality franchisees we intend to engage.”

If At First You Don’t Succeed

Outside the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory in Waterbury, Vermont, past a white picket fence, sits a group of colorful tombstones shaded by large overhanging tree branches.

“It swirled in our heads, it danced in our dreams, it proved not to be though, the best of ice creams,” the epitaph reads for Sugar Plum, a Ben & Jerry’s flavor that was short-lived from 1989 to 1990.

This Flavor Graveyard is where the ice cream concept buries its dead flavors, some of which, like Sugar Plum, were utter failures. But they weren’t entirely fruitless.
