ShopHouse Opens in Columbia, MD

ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, the Southeast Asian restaurant created by Chipotle Mexican Grill, will open the doors to its newest location at 10300 Little Patuxent Parkway, in Columbia, Maryland, on Monday, August 25.

“We serve the fresh, bold flavors of Southeast Asia, much like the traditional Thai food I grew up eating with my mom and aunt,” says Tim Wildin, brand director for ShopHouse. “I am proud that the menu showcases these flavors in a fast, nutritious, and affordable way.”

Restaurants Get REAL

Certification program gives operators infrastructure to go healthy.

Fast casual Energy Kitchen is one restaurant using the REAL certification.

Several quick-service restaurants are doubling down on their health and wellness efforts thanks to the new REAL Certification program from the United States Healthful Food Council (USHFC).

Established in 2011, the USHFC is a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit, nongovernmental organization dedicated to fighting obesity, diabetes, and other food-related diseases by increasing access to healthful, affordable, and sustainable food and beverages. The USHFC works toward its mission through the REAL Certification, nutrition analysis, menu labeling, and recipe consulting.

The 5 in 5

In the highly competitive restaurant industry, where innovation reigns, a lot can happen in the span of half a decade. Five years ago, the quick-serve industry was a different place. Five Guys was mostly a regional player and the better-burger category had yet to explode. Chipotle started making headlines with its commitment to sustainable food. And operators were raving about hot trends like eco-friendly packaging and the renewed focus on coffee.

American as Fresh Stir Fry

There’s not much that Americans find foreign about Asian food these days.

Chinese dishes are as popular as any other ethnic food served at U.S. restaurants, while Japanese and Thai menu items have become commonplace across the country. And cuisine from other Asian nations is increasingly finding its way to American menus.

A variety of limited-service restaurants—chains and independents—feature dishes from one or several Far East cultures.

Chipotle Reveals Asian Concept

Chipotle Mexican Grill unveiled additional details for its new restaurant concept slated to open this summer. The concept, ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, is inspired by the traditional shophouses found throughout Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Shophouses are classical two- or three-story buildings where families live upstairs and run restaurants or fresh markets on the ground level.
