My year-end top brand stories recap was well received last year, and I decided to do it again. I’ll break from my usual Q&A format to recap this year’s most important brand developments in fast food.
Smashburger continues its Westchester County expansion with the opening of its newest restaurant located at the Midway Shopping Center, 913 Central Park Ave., Scarsdale, New York, on Monday, December 9. Owned and operated by Smash Partners, Smashburger brings its burgers that are smashed fresh, served along with its Haagen-Dazs shakes, and regional menu items crafted to please locals’ palates. The company has hired 45 local team members to staff its new location.
Smashburger announced it has added four new partners to its growing family of better-burger franchisees. The commitment for 54 new restaurants brings Smashburger’s total active franchise pipeline to about 400 units set to open over the next several years. As a part of the company’s ongoing commitment to expand operations across all fifty states, the agreements launch Smashburger into new markets in Oakland, California, and Orlando, Florida, in addition to further extending its footprint in Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Jacksonville, Florida.
QSR International, the master franchisee of Smashburger in Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of South America, has entered into a development agreement with Corporacion Hamburgo S.A. de C.V. to develop three Smashburger restaurants in El Salvador. QSR International has also entered into a development agreement with Carlos Eduardo Lopez to develop 15 Smashburger restaurants in Venezuela.
Smashburger, the better-burger restaurant concept, announced that Scott Crane, who has led company operations for the past six years as president, was appointed to the position of chief executive officer. This news comes upon the departure of former CEO David Prokupek.
Smashburger, the expanding better burger concept, announced it will be the first national restaurant chain to roll out Honest Tea’s iced tea options at all restaurants nationwide. Honest Tea is a top-selling organic bottled tea company. Each Smashburger location will brew a selection of iced tea options, all made from organic ingredients, including Classic Green Tea, Just Iced Tea, Lemon Herbal Tea, and Naturally Flavored Raspberry Tea.
Smashburger, the rapidly expanding better-burger restaurant concept, unveiled an exclusive limited-time only Raspberry Sorbet Shake to benefit Susan G. Komen and in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The new shake will be available in Smashburger restaurants throughout the U.S. from Tuesday, October 1 through Thursday, October 31, 2013. The Raspberry Sorbet Shake is hand-spun and combines Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream with Häagen-Dazs Raspberry Sorbet for a blended treat.
Smashburger, the rapidly expanding better burger restaurant concept, announced the recipients of its most prestigious annual awards, including Franchisee of The Year, which were presented to seven deserving franchise groups and corporate leaders at the company’s 2013 Conference held in Laguna Beach, California, from September 18-20.
Smashburger announced it will provide first responders assisting in the rescue and evacuation operation of Bolder County, Colorado's flood emergency a free entree, side, and beverage at all of its Colorado-area units. A valid first responder ID is required for redemption.
The company also invites first responders to use its restaurants as a place to take a break and charge electronic devices as needed.
Two years ago, daily-deal sites such as Groupon, LivingSocial, and a host of other regional and national players boomed as customers clamored for discounted products and services. Many of the sites eventually closed up shop as the trend faded and the space became too saturated.
