Smiling Moose Deli Opens New Units, Launches New Menu Item

Smiling Moose Deli recently opened four new locations in Cincinnati, Ohio; Rapid City, South Dakota; Bozeman, Montana; and Fargo, North Dakota. Smiling Moose Deli has also expanded its menu with the release of a brand new dish called Mo!Mac, a combination of the signature Mighty Mo! and classic Mac ‘n Cheese.

Smiling Moose Backs Manliest Month of the Year

Smiling Moose Deli’s Mo the Moose will help lead the charge in support of men’s health and prostate cancer, getting behind a world-wide event called Movember. Combining the ‘moustache’ and ‘November’, the Movember event is gaining momentum around the world—men and women everywhere, sport a moustache demonstrating their support for the cause. Taking it one step farther, Smiling Moose Deli will donate a portion of the proceeds from every Mighty Mo! sandwich sold this month to the Movember Foundation.

Smiling Moose Rebuilds Flooded Areas Cookie at a Time

Based in Boulder, Colorado, one of the communities heaviest hit by recent flooding, Smiling Moose Deli witnessed the devastation from the fast-rising waters first hand. Because of the massive geographic area this storm covered, Smiling Moose Deli employees on the Front Range found themselves displaced from their homes or faced with extensive property damage.

Dallas Cowboys Legend Opens 2nd Smiling Moose Deli

Super Bowl champion and Dallas Cowboys legend Daryl “Moose” Johnston announced the opening of North Texas’s second Smiling Moose Deli location, this one located at 501 W. Hickory St. (corner of W. Hickory St. and Carroll Blvd.) in Denton, Texas—centrally located between the University of North Texas campus and downtown Denton.

The Franchise Fix

Operators get creative with their franchising efforts in 2013.

Whether they’re attending trade shows or paying visits to existing franchisees, quick-service operators still rely on boots-on-the-ground approaches to recruiting new franchisees. But with the economy still struggling to take off, some brand executives say a little creativity is also needed to attract talented, driven people in 2013.

David Prokupek, chairman and CEO of Smashburger, says his company is taking a holistic approach to franchising this year, combining high visibility at trade shows and booking time with promising referrals.

A New Age for Women

This is not the 1950s. Women aren’t confined to the home, cooking, cleaning, and caring for the kids (unless they want to, of course), nor can they only find work as secretaries in a male-dominated corporate world. No, today, women have power: They can balance work and family life; they can excel in any profession; and, just like men, they can own their own businesses.

One to Watch: Smiling Moose Deli

Smiling Moose Deli’s average unit volume is up almost 40 percent this year, and for that, president and founder Kevin Sloane has women to thank.

“When we first started, all we had were hearty New York–style sub sandwiches,” he says. “Now we do a custom chopped salad bar where guests can pick all of their toppings, and that alone opened a broader demographic, especially on the female side. Our customer makeup was 65 percent men. Now it’s 50-50.”

Smiling Moose Deli Targets Young Entrepreneurs

Smiling Moose Deli’s Mo the Moose has been racking up points with young entrepreneurs. The last three Smiling Moose Deli store openings have all been accomplished by owners under the age of 30, and interestingly, none of them had prior experience in the restaurant industry.

Nathan Everson just opened his first store in Fargo, North Dakota, last month at the age of 29.  He has a background in aviation, an appreciation for good food, and an eye on the future.

Smiling Moose Deli Adds Units in West Texas, Montana

Smiling Moose Deli has just signed two multi-store deals that will bring eight new locations to West Texas and Montana, covering a significant geographic area.

With a total of 16 locations open, and 12 more under development, Smiling Moose Deli is enjoying the results of its efforts to keep growth strong by growing steady.

Smiling Moose Deli President, Larry Hill, says the brand encourages storeowners to open one location, in order to experience the restaurant industry, before buying multiples, just to be sure.
