McDonald’s introduced a new app Wednesday that will allow employees to streamline their path to a future career.

The brand said the new app, named Archway to Careers, will help workers find and identify local educational and career opportunities. The search can be personalized via a career path assessment, and a user can receive real-time assistance from an adviser to help define goals and monitor progress. The app was built in partnership with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning and InsideTrack, a nationally recognized education coaching company.

McDonald’s takes aim at the soft skills problem

The app’s content builds on findings from a workforce preparedness study the Chicago-based company commissioned in 2018, which emphasized the importance of soft skills and identified preferable industries for employees like arts and entertainment, technology, entrepreneurship, health care, and food service. For employees wanting internal growth, the app can help users find compatible opportunities at other McDonald’s restaurants and the corporate office.

It also features a digital guide bot named “Kai” that can answer questions 24/7 and provide research-based advice.

The mobile technology is an extension of the chain’s Archways to Opportunity programs, which have increased access to education for more than 50,000 employees and awarded more than $90 million in tuition since it began in 2015. The app can help users pinpoint which Archways to Opportunity program fits their need and can support them in reaching their career goals.

“The McDonald’s system workforce has immeasurable talent to offer, and with its existing education benefits coupled with this rich new mobile experience, restaurant employees are better equipped to discover and advance their careers, positioning themselves for long-term career success no matter where they end up,” said Rob Lauber, the company’s chief learning officer.

The app is available for download on both iOS and Android devices.
