Ten Houston area high school teams came together at the Houston Regional Texas ProStart Invitational  to demonstrate their mastery of culinary arts and compete for a chnace to represent the state of Texas at the National ProSmart Invitational.

The Texas ProStart Invitational is hosted by the Texas Restaurant Association Education Foundation and the Greater Houston Restaurant Association.

The competition, which took place January 29 and was sponsored by U.S. Foodservice, required each team to prepare an appetizer, entree, and desert using only a butane burner and no battery-operated tools. The teams were judged based on creativity, plate presentation, teamwork, professionalism, and taste.

"World class culinary skills are in high demand," says Steve Guberman, division president of U.S. Foodservice-Houston. "U.S. Foodservice sponsors events like the Houston Regional Text ProStart Invitational to help students gain valuable, real-world experience that will help them become top chefs and leaders in the culinary arts field in the future."

The winning teams, who will go on to participate in the state competition in Austin on March 5, are Carl Wunsche High School (in third place), Jeff Davis High School (in second place), and Westside High School (in first place).
