Family Team Takes Doc Popcorn Into San Diego
Husband-and-wife team Jon and Cris Kirkland and their son Austin are satisfying San Diego’s snack cravings with their recently opened Doc Popcorn at Westfield Plaza Camino Real Mall, offering an all-natural fresh-popped snack.
The new Doc Popcorn is the second location to open in Southern California, joining an existing location in West Covina. A third Doc Popcorn is in development for the San Diego area, and will open at the Westfield North County Mall in Escondido.
“There’s no better feeling than seeing the looks on peoples’ faces when they bite into our popcorn,” says Jon, a former global account manager for a technology company. “We are beyond excited about giving shoppers and our fellow mall store employees a healthier snack alternative, and one they can enjoy eating because it tastes great.”
To celebrate its grand opening on April 17, Doc Popcorn will give away free small bags of Doc Popcorn from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Jon handles day-to-day operations with Austin. Cris, an office manager for an insurance company, helps arrange Doc Popcorn fundraisers to benefit local schools and organizations, and works at Doc Popcorn on the weekends.
Doc Popcorn pops its non-GMO, whole-grain kernels in 100 percent corn oil and offers a wide variety of distinctive flavors made from blends of natural ingredients. Gourmet flavors range from Cheesy Cheddar and Sweet Butter to Sinfully Cinnamon and Hoppin' Jalapeño.

In addition to Westfield Plaza Camino Real Mall, the Kirklands plan to open additional Doc Popcorn locations at San Diego event venues.

The Westfield Plaza Camino Real Mall Mall PopCart is part of Doc Popcorn’s rapid U.S. growth. The brand’s franchising program launched in mid-2009, and amid the challenging U.S. economic landscape the company has awarded more than 30 franchise agreements in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, Alaska, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
