McDonald’s intends to rid its menu of Super Size fries and soft drinks, according to reports from Dow Jones and Reuters. The 7-ounce fries and 42-ounce soft drinks will no longer be part of the everyday menu, although the super-sized drink will remain available as a promotional item, said the reports. The larger fry size will be out of restaurants by the end of 2004.

McDonald’s will still offer a 6-ounce fry size.

The move is the latest in McDonald’s efforts to promote its “healthy lifestyle initiative.” It is also arguably the most significant development, as the quick-serve industry in general has received flak for its super-sized meal offerings. McDonald’s has been among the chief targets of critics.
