North Carolina–based Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q completed a “Freedom Week” program that allowed customers to donate items to U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan. Customers who donated one or more items received a free Bar-B-Q sandwich, courtesy of Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q.

“We received an outpouring of support from the public when they heard about the care packages we are sending to a Navy unit stationed in Afghanistan,” says Richard Averitte, marketing director for Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q. “We thought this would be a great way for them to get involved.”

Items that were donated included magazines, coffee, candy, snacks, batteries, puzzles, games, and fitness-related items. All donations will be shipped to the company’s “adopted” unit deployed in southern Afghanistan, US Navy EOD Mobile Unit Three.

Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q has over 30 locations in North Carolina as well as an online store where Bar-B-Q can be shipped anywhere in the United States.
