The National Restaurant Association issued the following statement of support for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy’s and Committee member Senator Mike Lee’s introduction of the Patent Transparency and Improvements Act of 2013, a strong step forward in protecting businesses improperly targeted by patent trolls:

“We applaud Senators Leahy and Lee’s bipartisan commitment to fight the continued attack on restaurant and small business innovation through frivolous claims made by patent trolls,” wrote Scott DeFife, executive vice president of policy and government affairs for the National Restaurant Association. “The Patent Transparency and Improvements Act would require greater transparency in demand letters and a more equitable litigation process for those who fight frivolous claims in court. As patent trolls continue to stifle economic growth, we thank the senators for working with us to put an end to this problem once and for all so restaurants can have the freedom to move their businesses forward.”
