Sailormen Inc., Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) announced today that the 2013 “Appetite for a Cure” program and the Sailormen Inc., Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Golf Classic have raised more than $670,000 to help support those affected by neuromuscular disease.

This year's Appetite for a Cure program ran from January 28 through March 17 at participating Popeyes restaurants in south Florida and across the southeast. The program raised more than $503,000 through the sale of $1 coupon cards worth $30 to be used toward free and discounted purchases during future visits.

Additionally, more than 40 companies sponsored the ninth annual Sailormen Inc., Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Golf Classic, a premier golf event, held May 9 in Miami Lakes, Florida, that raised more than $167,000. The tournament was hosted by former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL player Gino Torretta.

“I'm proud of Sailormen/Popeyes employees, customers, and business partners for helping us reach our fundraising goal for MDA through this year's 'Appetite for a Cure' program and the Golf Classic," says Bob Berg, CEO of Sailormen Inc. "It's important to us to go above and beyond to help families living with muscle disease in our community and support important MDA programs, like MDA summer camp.

"Sailormen Inc. is the largest domestic franchisee of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants, with 143 locations in seven states. The company has raised nearly $4 million for MDA since 2002.

"Sailormen/Popeyes made such a difference for MDA by raising funds through two hugely successful programs and events,” says Joanne Bowsman, executive director of the MDA chapter in south Florida. “Their efforts are extremely important to MDA families because they help raise not only awareness, but the funds needed to help find treatments and cures for muscle disease."
