Sbarro is turning up the heat with the newest addition to its menu, the 3 Pepper Chicken Pizza. The premium offering features fresh ingredients, bold flavors, and a custom blend of jalapeño, poblano, and red peppers.

Every 3 Pepper Chicken Pizza starts with dough that is made fresh daily, then topped with Sbarro’s signature San Marzano­–style tomato sauce. Poblano pesto, grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, jalapeños, Pepper Jack cheese, and 100 percent whole-milk Mozzarella complete the pizzas.

Fast casual has dominated foodservice success stories in recent years, with the category sporting an 11 percent sales hike in 2013, according to Technomic. That success has inspired several traditional quick-service brands to jump on the fast-casual bandwagon with wholly new sister brands, the latest example being Taco Bell with its new U.S. Taco Co. and Urban Taproom brand.

With its edgy “Day of the Dead” theming and upscale fusion menu items, U.S. Taco Co. aims to stand out from both Taco Bell as well as other fast-casual operators.

Sbarro Files for Bankruptcy

Sbarro LLC filed a petition with the U.S Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York seeking reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

The filing was made to implement a prepackaged reorganization plan supported by a near-unanimous majority of the company’s lenders representing 98 percent of the Company’s debt. The consensual filing is designed to allow for a quick exit from bankruptcy as the Company executes a broader plan developed by the new management team that included the closure of underperforming stores.

Sbarro Comments on Store Closings

Sbarro announced the closure of 155 of its North American, company-owned eateries.

The action represents an important step towards improving the financial performance of the company and is designed to facilitate continued growth and investment in the brand. This action is part of a series of steps taken and planned by the new leadership team that took over in 2013. The closure of the company-owned stores will not affect franchised owned locations.

The closure of these underperforming stores will significantly improve the profitability of the company, company officials say.

As fast-casual pizza concepts make their mark across America, one of the nation’s top 10 pizza chains is joining the growing movement.

Sbarro will open its first Pizza Cucinova restaurant next week in a strip at Columbus, Ohio’s popular shopping center, Easton. The concept’s second and third units will open in early 2014 near downtown Columbus and in Cincinnati, respectively.

Sbarro Grows in South America with Units in Peru, Colombia

Taco Holdings, the master franchisee for Sbarro in Mexico with 23 eateries, will now spearhead the opening of more than 40 new eateries across Peru and Colombia, marking the first Sbarro locations to open in both countries.
