Along the Ohio River Road in Lesage, West Virginia, sits Hillbilly Hot Dogs, a destination stop for locals and tourists alike.

When winter hits, however, Hillbilly’s popular—and wildly distinctive—weenie stand sees a sharp, double-digit decline in revenue, says Sharie Knight, who opened the self-deprecating eatery with her husband, Sonny, in 1999. The sales drop is tough on the business, demanding ownership make some shrewd, strategic decisions to ensure the restaurant meets its annual financial targets.

“You really have to store your nuts,” Knight says.

Start to Finish: Wan Kim

When I started to look at this business, what I truly found beautiful was being able to bring my family every day. I am able to feed my children the very same products I strive to sell to the world. I love the foodservice business for that reason, but specifically Smoothie King for allowing me to have that feeling of satisfaction when offering my family the product we sell globally. I remember being in college and always looking at a late-night smoothie as a “sin-free” food.

“We realized that the new Cedar Park location was going to be our 700th store, so decided to celebrate the occasion the Smoothie King way, by incorporating fitness challenges and offering healthy smoothies to those in attendance,” says Wan Kim, owner and CEO of Smoothie King.

Smoothie King Banks on New iPad POS to Increase Sales

That a point-of-sales system can be a pivotal part of a guest’s experience at a quick-service restaurant isn’t a novel idea. But it’s rare to find a large national chain that takes that stance. New Orleans area–based Smoothie King will be the first brand of its size to roll out an iPad POS  with that reason in mind with the help of Revel Systems.

“You’d never hear a customer comment on an old, legacy POS system; they don’t even see it,” says Revel CTO Chris Ciabarra. “But when they see an iPad, it gives them that edge and association with Apple.”
