Planet Sub has announced plans to expand into the Cleveland and Akron, Ohio markets in late 2014 with a five-store area development agreement with new franchisee Aaron Shoemaker and Rymaker Enterprises, LLC.
“We are excited to bring the ‘PSUB’ experience to Ohio. Our goal is to expand in Northern Ohio with multiple locations. We would also love to bring Planet Sub to Central Ohio in the future,” Shoemaker says.
Planet Sub currently has 34 open units, and 45 stores in development with plans to open at least seven more brick and mortar stores in 2014.
At Planet Sub, guests are handed a playing card when they order and listen for that card to be called, indicating their food is ready. The sandwich shop’s real calling card, however, is bread made entirely from scratch on the premises.
“Every Planet Sub is also a bakery,” says cofounder and CEO Jeff Klusman. “There is a dough mixer in every location.”
Planet Sub traces its roots to 1979, when Yello Sub opened near the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
Planet Sub announced plans to expand into the Dallas–Fort Worth market in late 2014 with a three store development agreement with new franchisees Steve Davidson and Patrick Pearson.
Steve Davidson, who plans to also be the stores’ operator, says he is most excited about the quality of the product as they begin their expansion plans. “The idea of an old approach to good food; if you put the work in, you’ll get a better product,” he says. “A lot of franchises talk about their bread being what ‘makes their sandwich,’ but PSub really does make the bread that makes their sandwiches.”
As part of their ongoing sustainability initiatives, Planet Sub announced that on Earth Day (April 22, 2014) the company, through their newfound partnership with Trees For the Future has made a commitment to plant one tree for every sandwich sold. The company hopes to plant at least 8,000 trees through their efforts on Earth Day.
