Following on the heels of the opening of the 10th Café Yumm! restaurant in downtown Portland, Oregon, in the brand new Portland State University Recreation Center on June 1, Café Yumm! was recognized for environmental practices and for growth.

BRING Recycling conducted an exhaustive environmental assessment of Café Yumm!’s business practices and awarded it the RE:think Recognition Award for its efforts to reduce its environmental impact. Café Yumm! is the third business to receive the award.

The award is an acknowledgment of Café Yumm!’s efforts to further sustainability concepts from waste prevention to energy conservation. For example, Café Yumm! uses recycled post-consumer paper as countertops, agricultural waste as table tops and flooring material, LED lighting, water saving techniques, and much more. Café Yumm! also participates in EWEB’s wind power initiative.

Founder and president Mark Beauchamp accepted the award from Carolyn Stein, education coordinator for BRING on June 30.

“Environmental stewardship is a fundamental value at Café Yumm!, which is embraced by all of our staff. BRING’s recognition of what we have already accomplished serves to help inspire us to do even more,” Beauchamp says.

Café Yumm!’s environmental practices are but one example of why the company has again made the Portland Business Journal’s Top 100 List of Privately Owned Oregon Businesses. At the award ceremony on June 24, Café Yumm! was announced as number 17 on the list.

“Everyone at Café Yumm! has worked hard over the past couple of years and it is satisfying to be recognized by the Portland Business Journal for our accomplishments,” Beauchamp says. “I am especially proud our guests have grown in number so much so that we have grown from two restaurants in 2007 to 10 restaurants today. And, we have many more restaurants on the way.”

Companies are ranked on the Top 100 by percentage of revenue growth over the past three years. In order to qualify, private companies must be headquartered in Oregon or Southwest Washington, experience growth, and experience revenue of at least $250,000 in 2007. Café Yumm! first appeared on the Top 100 list in 2009.
