A&W Restaurants Spoofing Academy Awards with Contest

    Industry News | February 3, 2017

To play along with this year's awards season, A&W Restaurants invites movie buffs to participate in the #AWcademyAwards Sweepstakes. Throughout February, social media users may share their spoofs of movie titles, vote for their favorite #AWcademyAwards nominees – such as Matthew McCurdnaughey, Spice C. Papa and Reeses Withaspoon—submit tongue-in-cheek movie reviews and chuckle at movie poster parodies.

The contest runs February 1—28, with 20 weekly prizes randomly awarded to fans on the A&W social channels. Prizes include A&W Gift Checks, limited edition golden mini mugs, orange bowties and an invitation to join A&W’s February 26 live Tweet-along of the Academy Awards. Fans can play along on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat using the hashtag #AWcademyAwards.

“Like the Academy Awards, A&W is a part of American pop culture,” says Sarah Blasi, vice president of marketing. “We know that many social media users love movies. This online giveaway and live-tweet will be buzz-worthy and a fun way to involve our current and new fans in an event that’s sure to be a trending topic. Plus, when we started thinking of funny movie titles, we just couldn’t stop!’”
