Burma Superstar, the family of restaurants known for bringing high-quality and flavorful Burmese cuisine to the Bay Area, and DoorDash, are teaming up to launch Burma Bites, a quick-service restaurant experience built for on-demand delivery from the ground up.

Burma Bites was originally developed due to the incredible delivery demand for Burma Superstar restaurants. Now, at a time when dine-in remains limited, Burma Bites enables Burma Superstar to experiment with a scalable model to reach new and existing customers, all while creating jobs in their community.

This marks the first time DoorDash has co-invested with a restaurant brand to build a new brick and mortar store, purpose-built for delivery. Burma and DoorDash have rethought the entire Burma Superstar menu and dining experience for off-premises. The experience features:

Brand new menu items: Items from their secret menu will be offered including the Superstar Spicy Mango Wings and Balachaung Fries.

More efficient prep: The kitchen has been built for delivery with “commercial” equipment that has a larger capacity and is designed to fulfill to-go orders.

Environmentally-friendly containers: To-go containers have been designed specifically for travel.

“Empowering restaurants with the tools to connect with more customers and build new revenue streams is in our DNA, and we’re taking our mission one step further by creating a to-go restaurant concept from scratch for one restaurant brand,” says Georgie Thomas, Head of Regional Merchant Partnerships at DoorDash. “COVID has accelerated the need for restaurants to be online and meet customers in new ways. We’re excited to partner with Burma Superstar and innovate on the delivery experience to help their brand continue to grow during this time.”

Burma Bites upholds the unique experience and commitment to quality of its sister restaurants in the Burma Superstar portfolio. The new restaurant brings the culture of family sharing, infused with the traditions and origins of Burmese cooking, to bring the Burmese “tea house” to life.

“We’ve been honored to be a part of the Bay Area community as cultural and culinary ambassadors of Burmese cuisine and tradition for more than 20 years,” says Desmond Tan, owner of Burma Superstar restaurants. “At such an uncertain time, we’re excited to introduce this new model that enables us to continue to bring Burmese food and culture to the community in a safe and accessible way. Through our partnership with DoorDash, we are rethinking the possibilities of our founding vision through our first delivery-only restaurant to bring affordable, quality, delicious fast-casual Burmese food to the Bay Area.”

Burma Bites will open its doors on Telegraph Avenue. This is Burma Superstar’s second Oakland location after opening its first in the Temescal community over 12 years ago. The restaurant will serve a delivery radius of 3-5 miles, reaching parts of surrounding neighborhoods including Berkeley, Alameda, and Oakland Hills.

“Oakland has long been a premier food destination representing international cuisines and cultures from nearly every country in the world. While the past few months have been some of the hardest in history for the restaurants that line our main streets, new restaurants like Burma Bites give us hope for the future and are a great way for our community to rebuild and recover safely,” adds Libby Schaaf, Oakland City Mayor. “We’re excited to officially welcome Burma Bites into our community.”

“The city’s deep immigrant roots, entwined with the growth of young families, make it the ideal first location for Burma Bites. It’s more important than ever that we double down on our commitment to the communities where we operate to keep the vibrancy of our main streets strong. We want to continue to add value to the city by offering accessible, affordable, quality Burmese food to the community,” Tan says.

Opening its doors officially on October 28, customers near the Burma Bites location can order pickup or delivery exclusively on the DoorDash app or website, Caviar app, or visit the location on 4911 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland to place an order to go. To celebrate, the first 100 customers to place an order at Burma Bites through DoorDash will receive a limited edition Burma Superstar and DoorDash branded retro lunchbox. The restaurant will handle delivery and pick up orders. Burma Bites will be open for lunch 11:30 AM to 2:30PM and dinner 5PM -9 PM daily.
