To kick off the year-long “Fanniversary” celebration of the Dairy Queen system’s 75th anniversary, the DQ culinary treat team, along with partner OREO, created a party in a cup with the debut of the Birthday Cake OREO Blizzard Treat as the Blizzard of the Month for January.

“We are ready to celebrate this extraordinary Fanniversary and the new year with our fans, and what better way to get it started than with the delicious new Birthday Cake OREO Blizzard Treat,” says Barry Westrum, executive vice president of marketing for American Dairy Queen Corporation (ADQ). “This Blizzard Treat is the first of many exciting innovations and first-time-ever events that will surprise and delight our fans throughout this momentous year.”

The Birthday Cake OREO Blizzard Treat is a sweet combination of OREO cookie pieces and confetti frosting with sprinkles mixed with the DQ system’ssignature vanilla soft serve. Available throughout the month of January, Birthday Cake OREO is available in four sizes, including the popular Mini.

“We are thrilled to kick off the DQ brand’s 75th anniversary year with an OREO-inspired Blizzard Treat,” says Marcus Brady, director of business development for Mondelez International, which owns OREO. “Here are three epic brands that have come together for one very special treat. Dairy Queen, Blizzard Treat, and OREO—it doesn’t get much better than that.”

The DQ brand was born on June 22, 1940, when pioneer franchisee Sherb Noble opened his first location in Joliet, Illinois, selling cones, sundaes, and take-home pints. Today, millions of DQ Fans enjoy the same delicious soft-serve and food products every day in more than 25 countries throughout the world.

Since 1985, the Dairy Queen system, a Berkshire Hathaway company, has been blending simple combinations of cookies, chocolates, nuts, fruits, and candies with DQ soft serve to create the signature Blizzard Treat. The iconic treat has created the served upside-down Blizzard culture and since then, one-of-a-kind flavors such as Chocolate Candy Shop and Confetti Cake have delighted Dairy Queen Fans as part of the featured Blizzard of the Month program, which began in 2003.

Many Blizzard Treat flavors, including the new Birthday Cake OREO, can be easily made into DQ Cakes, perfect for New Year’s, birthdays, celebrations, anniversaries, and more.

In addition, the Dairy Queen system’s featured food menu item in January is the $5 Buck Lunch Bacon Cheeseburger, which is served with fries, a beverage and choice of a sundae, all for $5. For just $1 more, fans also will have the option to upgrade their small sundae to a small Blizzard Treat. $5 Buck Lunch is available at participating locations and offer may vary in Texas.
