Innovative dessert options are building momentum in the food industry and The Hummus & Pita Co. is a key innovator. The rapidly growing Mediterranean restaurant added three unique flavors of dessert hummus to their menu: chocolate, cake batter, and cookie dough. The new dessert option, served with regular or cinnamon toast pita chips, is now available at all four New York City locations.
Like its traditional cousin, dessert hummus is made with chickpeas, but includes additional ingredients to create sweet and savory flavors. Surprisingly, dessert hummus also shares much of the traditional product’s nutritional value including low calorie count and fat and is also gluten free. The cake batter and chocolate hummus is dairy free. This innovative dessert has quickly become a hit with customers.
“Introducing dessert hummus has been such a great adventure for us,” says David Pesso, director of operations and business development. “We love hummus and everyone loves dessert, so pairing the two seemed natural to us. The response has been fantastic and it has quickly become a customer favorite—not to mention a favorite of ours too!”
The Hummus and Pita Co. has grown tremendously since Janice Axelrod opened the doors of the first location in 2011 on the simple idea of offering customers fresh, healthy, and creative Mediterranean food choices in a comfortable environment. The restaurant now has four stores across Manhattan and is implementing a strategy for long term growth through franchising with partner Fransmart—the industry leading developer responsible for the explosive growth of brands like Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Qdoba, and The Halal Guys.
