Portland-based ice cream company Salt & Straw will be opening its first scoop shop on the east coast on Friday, February 19 in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District at 246 NW 25th Street.

“Tyler and I fell hard for Miami. It’s a city with such an international presence and history of embracing hospitality, culture, meaningful food movements and social causes that align with the core values of our company,” says Salt & Straw Co-founder and CEO Kim Malek. “We are humbled and excited to reach this milestone, opening our first scoop shops on the East Coast. We’re eager to meet our neighbors and create a gathering place for residents and visitors of South Florida.”

Co-founder and Head Ice Cream Maker, Tyler Malek, has created a locally-sourced menu that embraces the spirit of Miami by using local ingredients. The scoop shop’s menu will feature Salt & Straw’s handmade cult classics, seasonal ice creams and specialty monthly flavors that tell the story of Miami through the unique chefs and artisans in the city.

Guests can expect to find flavors such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Honey Lavender, Chocolate Gooey Brownie and Salted, Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough alongside unique flavors specific to the 305 and a handful of seasonal offerings.

Miami Classic flavors will include:

  • Panther Coffee Chocolate Tres Leches
  • The Salty Donut Guava + Cheese
  • Wynwood Brewing Mango Habanero (v)
  • Exquisito Chocolates Hazelnut Cookies & Cream (v)

Miami Seasonal flavors for the opening months include:

  • Bacon Biscuit Crumble w/ Pickle Caramel
  • Salted Coconut Grapefruit Daiquiri (v)

“Our goal is to identify and partner with the city’s most beloved artisans, ranging from bakers and chocolate makers to artists and nonprofits,” says Co-Founder and Head Ice Cream Maker Tyler Malek. “Then we understand the flavors, ingredients, techniques, and heritage that make those individual partners unique. From there, we envision how we would showcase them on the menu, creating ice cream that’s as captivating as it is provocative.”

Inspired by becoming a gathering place for the community, the space will showcase design direction from longtime partner, Portland-based Osmose Design, in tandem with Kim and Tyler, to create a warm, welcoming neighborhood spot to explore unbelievable ice cream flavors and connect with one another. Salt & Straw Wynwood will represent the brand’s iconic design, with curved oak edges, parquet wood inlay, custom terrazzo flooring and bespoke abstract waffle cone walls, creating a mood that’s both nostalgic and modern.

The Salt & Straw team prides itself on their efforts to fully immerse themselves in the communities where they open. This means getting to know and understanding the cities and neighborhoods by way of local partners and organizations. To celebrate the brand’s milestone opening, Salt & Straw will be hosting an outdoor, socially-distant “Flavors of Miami” pop-up in collaboration Pharrell Williams’ apparel and accessories brand store, BBC ICECREAM, partners featured on the opening menu and the Overtown Youth Center, Salt & Straw Wynwood’s charitable partner organization.

Keeping the health and safety of all staff, guests and the community a top priority, precautions in accordance with guidelines from the CDC, local government and health officials, will be implemented as part of the shop’s opening protocols from day one as well as enforced at the pop-up. This includes limited capacity; social distancing; mask requirements for staff and guests; extensive sanitization; and hand sanitizer offered throughout.

Salt & Straw will open its Wynwood location at 246 NW 25th Street on Friday, February 19, 2021. The shop will be open 12pm-11pm. A second Salt & Straw Miami location in Coconut Grove is slated to open March 2021; more details to come.
