Jersey Mike’s Subs is harnessing its national network of franchise owners for the first time to support a singular cause. A new quarterly cause-related initiative is launching with the first fundraising effort benefiting Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).

To officially launch the program, a Jersey Mike’s advance team descended on Cincinnati last week to distribute thousands of special coupons entitling recipients to a free regular sub upon presentation of the coupon and $1 donation to the charity. Additional fundraising efforts for BGCA will take place nationally in February.

“Due to the economy, many companies are cutting back on philanthropic budgets which means deserving organizations will suffer — we can’t let that happen,” says Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of Jersey Mike’s. “Jersey Mike’s is committed to doing even more this year, starting with this fundraiser. We are huge proponents of mentoring, which is why we are so inspired by the work of Boys & Girls Clubs. Their efforts offer kids the chance to believe in and achieve their dreams, and we look forward to contributing to that.”

Giving back has always been central to Jersey Mike’s business philosophy, but this is the first time the company has united franchisees around a common cause. In 2009, Jersey Mike’s will select one charity per quarter to benefit from its national fundraising efforts. Boys & Girls Clubs of America is the first group selected, and the other charity partners will be announced throughout the year.

“Peter Cancro, and the entire Jersey Mike’s team, sets a wonderful example for our kids,” says Cyndi Court, executive vice president, BGCA. “Jersey Mike’s support enables us to continue to fulfill our promise of helping young people reach their full potential.”
