Jersey Mike’s Subs, known for its fresh sliced and grilled sandwiches, is introducing gluten-free rolls nationwide.

The new rolls will be featured in every one of the brand’s more than 1,300 locations. After receiving positive reviews in test markets, Jersey Mike’s plans to launch the gluten–free sub rolls December 4.

Jersey Mike’s has partnered with Udi’s for their gluten–free subs rolls, which are manufactured in Denver by Boulder Brands. Jersey Mike’s began testing Udi’s rolls in more than 100 Los Angeles locations and 19 West Palm Beach locations last December.

“The idea of offering gluten–free rolls came from a franchisee whose daughter had celiac disease,” says Michael Manzo, Jersey Mike’s COO. “Before going national, we decided to try a pilot in several markets and we are happy to report success. Customers loved the taste and they were excited to be able to eat a Jersey Mike’s sub sandwich again or for the very first time.”

To prepare for the national launch, Manzo says the company is spending time training team members on how to carefully incorporate this new product into the business.

Udi’s rolls arrive at the restaurant individually wrapped and fully baked. The packaging is not opened until the sub is ordered, and as a result, there is little risk of cross contamination with other subs. Additionally, Jersey Mike’s team members will wear new gloves when handling the rolls and use knives and other utensils that haven’t touched other bread products when slicing the gluten free rolls. They also prepare each sub on parchment paper to avoid contact with gluten.

Udi’s sub roll can be used as a substitute for most hot or cold subs on Jersey Mike’s menu. Excepted are items that contain gluten, such as the Meatball and Cheese and Chicken Parm subs. The gluten–free subs can be made Mike’s Way, with onions, lettuce, and tomatoes, and topped off with an exquisite zing of The Juice: red wine vinegar and olive oil blended to perfection.

Udi’s won “Best of Gluten-Free” for their bagels, muffins, and sandwich bread loaf in 2012.

Started in 1956, Jersey Mike’s now has 1,500 restaurants open and under development nationwide. This year, Jersey Mike’s was named the country’s fastest-growing Limited Service Chain and fastest-growing sandwich chain in the 2017 Nation’s Restaurant News Top 100.
