Ahoy, maties!” Louisville-based Long John Silver’s seafood restaurants will celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Thursday, September 19, by offering a free piece of fish to all “land lubbers” who are willing to “shiver me timbers” or “walk the plank” – in other words, talk like a pirate!

Observance of International Talk Like a Pirate Day began in 2002 when founders John Bauer and Mark Summers persuaded Pulitzer prize winning columnist Dave Barry to write about their unusual concept in his Miami Herald column. According to Barry, talking like a pirate will infuse your everyday conversations with romance and danger. He suggests that the way to prepare for this unique holiday is to “practice incorporating pirate terminology into your everyday speech.”

Some typical pirate speech might be, “Ahoy” (hello), “Avast” (watch out!),“Step smartly, me lad” (get out of my way) or “Step smartly before I hang ye from the yard arm!” (seriously, get out of my way!). When in doubt, there is always “Aarrrrrrr!”

International Talk Like a Pirate Day will be observed at participating Long John Silver’s restaurants. “We think this is a fitting tribute to the history of our brand,” says Long John Silver’s president and CEO Mike Kern. “And we want to celebrate and have fun with all of our customers. We look forward to a terrific day where our restaurants will be filled with laughter and many memories to treasure.”

The Talk Like a Pirate Free Fish promotion is being promoted through e-blasts and social media. The offer is valid during regular business hours at participating Long John Silver’s locations. Offer valid for a limited time only. Limit one per customer, per visit. Eye patches are optional.
