According to a Dow Jones Busines News report today, McDonald’s began offering a vegetarian alternative to its burger line in certain Southern California locations.

The McVeggie is a soy-based patty made by Hain Celestrial Group Inc. on a whole wheat bun. The sandwich has only 8 grams of fat and 350 calories.

The new burger follows the nationwide introduction of premium salads aimed at providing alternatives to customers.

No word as of yet whether McVeggie will go nationwide, according to the news agency.
