Papa John’s Announces February Comparable Sales Results Papa John’s International, Inc. (NASDAQ:PZZA) today announced that systemwide comparable sales for the four weeks ended February 20, 2000, increased 5.6% which was comprised of a 6.3% increase at company-owned restaurants and a 5.4% increase at franchised units.

These results were favorably affected by the timing of the 2000 winter national advertising promotion relative to the 1999 promotion. Substantially all of the 2000 promotion occurred during the February period, while only approximately 60% of the 1999 promotion occurred during the comparable period. The balance of the 1999 promotion occurred during the March comparable period, and accordingly, this timing is expected to unfavorably affect the March 2000 comparable sales results.

At March 13, 2000, there were 2,313 Papa John’s restaurants (595 domestic company-owned, 1,689 domestic franchised and 29 international franchised) operating in 47 states, the District of Columbia and five international markets. Papa John’s also owns or franchises 205 Perfect Pizza restaurants (11 company-owned and 194 franchised) in the United Kingdom.

Papa John’s was also ranked number one in customer satisfaction among all fast food restaurants in the 1999 American Customer Satisfaction Index survey (conducted by the National Quality Research Center at the University of Michigan Business School).
