This March, Salt & Straw ice cream opens its first Del Mar scoop shop in San Diego within the anticipated One Paseo mixed-use development. Known for its taste-provoking flavors, the small-batch, family-run company offers a personalized and one-of-a-kind ice cream experience that surprises, delights and brings guests together.

The Del Mar scoop shop showcases flavors that tell a story about beloved California-based artisans and products. Offerings include custom San Diego favorites such as Peanut Butter Stout with Chocolate Chicharrón featuring Belching Beaver Brewery’s peanut butter milk stout, and James Coffee and Bourbon, as well as classics such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons. With the opening of the scoop shop, Salt & Straw debuts two new dairy-free flavors — Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip and Dandelion Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream — that showcase the company’s commitment to offering guests a 20% vegan menu. All flavors are handmade in small batches using organic, sustainable and thoughtfully-sourced ingredients such as cream from Scott Brothers Dairy, a family-owned Southern California farm.

In addition to the classic line-up of flavors that highlight Tyler Malek’s passion for working with local products and fellow artisans, a curated menu of themed specials rotates monthly. Upon opening and through the month of March, Salt & Straw features “The Flavor Vault” series with re-released flavors highlighting past Salt & Straw favorites, including Pots of Gold & Rainbows, Wild-Foraged Berry Slab Pie, Smoked Sea Salt & Chocolate Crack, Cupcake Royale’s Salted Caramel Cupcake and Silencio Black Tea & Coconut Stracciatella.

Designed in collaboration with Andee Hess of Portland-based Osmose Design, the new scoop shop features custom design details that recall a modern-day mercantile, offering a welcoming setting to gather within One Paseo. A large exterior hand-painted mural of an ice cream cone incorporates Salt & Straw’s signature striped motif—a nod to the company’s origins as a red-and-white striped ice cream cart.

Founded in 2011 by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek in Portland, Oregon, Salt & Straw has become a West Coast favorite with scoop shops in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, in addition to its soft-serve dessert bar, Wiz Bang Bar, in Portland. Each of head ice cream maker Tyler Malek’s inspired flavors is handmade in small batches using the best local, organic and sustainable ingredients.

Outside their scoop shops, Salt & Straw is dedicated to supporting local schools and raising awareness for issues such as childhood hunger and equal rights. With the new One Paseo location Salt & Straw expands this ongoing commitment to its Del Mar neighborhood and North County community.
