The Works Café, featuring traditional New York-style boiled and baked bagels, Vermont cream cheese, and single source La Minita coffee, is open at 25 South Main Street, next to the Dartmouth Coop. The café is open from 6AM to 8PM.
Additional menu offerings include breakfast burritos, real fruit smoothies, grilled sandwiches, organic quinoa bowls, chef-inspired salads, gourmet comfort food, soups, in-house baked breads, pastries and more. Fresh bagels and lox is a specialty. There are options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Works sources chicken, ham, bacon and turkey raised without antibiotics or hormones and fed an all-vegetarian diet. And all their meats come from farms certified humane.
Richard French, founder and CEO of The Works, has a long history in the food business. He originally launched Bagel Works, in Manchester, VT back in 1988 after graduating from University of Vermont. Inspired by his love of food, French has spent more than three decades growing and adapting that first concept. French continues to connect his passion for fresh, healthy, thoughtfully-sourced foods with his commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
French says the new Hanover café is committed to using local resources whenever possible. Their hormone-free cream cheese is from McGarry Dairy in Enosburg Falls, VT; organic wheat flour from Farmer Ground Flour in Trumansburg, NY; eggs from Nelly’s Free Range in Monroe, NH; organic yogurt from Stonyfield Farm in Londonderry, NH; smoked salmon from True North Salmon, Ltd. in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick; and blueberries from Wyman’s in Maine.
The Works’ commitment to sustainability and the environment does not end with the food. According to French, there’s more than one mission behind the menu. “All Works locations recycle and most compost. The buildout of our new Hanover café relied on lots of repurposed, up-cycled and green products —many made by local craftspeople—and energy efficient equipment.” The Works’ interior space includes reclaimed wood booths, Energy Star rated kitchen equipment and LED light fixtures.
French went on to say, “We really do care about our partners and our people. We care deeply about the food we sell, and we’re looking forward to Hanover enjoying it with us.”
