Domino’s Pizza International, a subsidiary of Domino’s Inc., has announced the opening of its 2,000th store outside the United States. The store opens today in Morelia, Michoacan de Ocampo, Mexico.

Domino’s Pizza International was formed in 1984, when the company opened its first store in Canada. In the ensuing years, Domino’s Pizza International has opened stores in 61 countries and territories around the world. The company opened its 1,000th store in 1995.

Mexico in recent years has become one of the fastest-growing and most successful markets for Domino’s Pizza International. Domino’s Pizza Mexico, owned and operated by Alsea, S.A. de C.V., Mexico City, now owns and operates 352 stores in Mexico, and recently acquired Domino’s operations in Brazil. It was the first franchised international market to reach the 200 and 300 store milestones. Mexico was the 19th market to enter the Domino’s Pizza system. Since the first store was built in 1989, Domino’s Pizza has become the no. 1 quick service restaurant chain in Mexico, with more stores than any other single chain in that country. Alsea opened 74 Domino’s Pizza stores in Mexico in 1999, and have opened 23 stores year-to-date.

The three best-selling toppings in Mexico are jalapeno peppers, ham and pineapple.

Founded in 1960, Domino’s Pizza owns and operates 6,599 company-owned and franchise units throughout the United States and 61 international markets.
