Loyal Back Yard Burgers fans who love the flamed-grilled 100 percent Black Angus beef burgers, turkey burgers, its famous seasoned fries and hand dipped milkshakes can celebrate. The better burger franchise will return to Columbus, Mississippi, and reopen at 1913 Highway 45 N, right in front of Walmart. The Columbus restaurant plans to hire approximately 20 employees to staff the restaurant.

The restaurant is under new ownership by an experienced Back Yard Burger franchisee, Josh Powell, who owns five Back Yard Burgers in Mississippi, including restaurants in Clarksdale, Cleveland, Corinth, Greenwood and now Columbus.

“Josh is a proven restaurant leader and has the experience to make the Columbus Back Yard Burgers into a great restaurant local guests will enjoy,” says David McDougall, CEO of Back Yard Burgers. “We are very pleased to once again offer our famous menu of burgers, and all the sides, to the community.”

Powell comes from a family of Back Yard Burgers owners.  His father was one of the first franchisees and he has since taken over the business.  Under Powell’s leadership, the company has expanded its reach to nine restaurants in Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Back Yard Burgers was acquired by Charlotte-based private equity firm Axum Capital Partners in 2017. The new holding company is now called Tatum Holdings, LLC and is focused on remodeling existing Back Yard Burgers locations, investing in technology, and growing the brand.

“It is exciting to see long-time franchisees re-investing in the Back Yard Burgers brand,” says Axum Capital partner Muhsin Muhammad II, former Wide Receiver for the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers.
