Coffee retailer Biggby Coffee has made Entrepreneur magazine’s annual Franchise 500 list for the second consecutive year-moving 34 spots up from the previous year. The fast-growing company ranked second among coffee retailers named to the prominent list, and 255th overall out of the 500 companies profiled.

Biggby Coffee features an ultra-relaxed environment where patrons enjoy more than 30 different gourmet coffees, fine teas and frozen drink selections, in addition to an assortment of pastries and other fine eatables. The company, founded in 1995, continues its rapid ascent in the gourmet coffee retail sector with 86 stores currently in operation across nine states, and another 70 under contract to open before 2010.

“This is a wonderful nod from one of the nation’s top publications for enterprising people,” says Mike McFall, president of Biggby Coffee. “Because we operate a 100 percent franchisee-owned model, this really speaks to the amazing job our owners and operators are doing across the country, and the degree to which they embody the entrepreneurial spirit.”

During its 29 years in existence, the Franchise 500 has become both a dominant competitive measure for franchisors and a primary research tool for entrepreneurs. The list recognizes business opportunities that demonstrate exceptional performance in areas including financial strength and stability, growth rate, and system size.

Biggby Coffee was formerly known as Beaner’s Coffee. The company announced it would change its name this past fall over concerns that its former name might be considered a disparaging term.
