All across the country, people will be celebrating National Chili Dog Day on Thursday, July 30. National Chili Dog Day is observed every year on the last Thursday of July to celebrate the chili dog as one of America’s favorite summertime foods.
And while it’s an American favorite, no other city will be consuming more chili dogs than Cincinnati, where the local variation, the Cincinnati-style Cheese Coney, is consumed by the millions. With more than 250 local chili restaurants, greater Cincinnati is Chilitown, USA, and cheese coneys (hot dog on a steamed bun, Cincinnati-style chili, onions, and mustard with mild shredded cheddar cheese piled high), are one of the iconic Cincinnati-style chili menu items.
Gold Star Chili, The Flavor of Cincinnati, will be celebrating National Chili Dog Day with Coney Mania, $1.19 cheese coneys all day long. This deep discount promotion is anticipated to increase the city’s already high-volume Cheese Coney consumption by selling close to 250,000 of the delicious dogs on that day alone.
Additionally Gold Star Chili will be holding a special National Chili Dog Day event, downtown on Fountain Square from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Gold Star Chilimobile will be handing out free cheese coneys while they last. Teams from 10 charitable and community organizations will participate in a coney-eating contest to be MCed by WGRR on-air personality, Wendy Walker, broadcasting live from Fountain Square. The winning team will be presented with a check for $1,965 for its organization as one of Gold Star’s 50th anniversary charitable initiatives.
