A group of Quad Cities investors has acquired Happy Joe’s Pizza & Ice Cream, taking ownership of the brand’s franchising company and three company-owned restaurants in Bettendorf and Davenport, Iowa.

Carlos Araujo, an executive with the ownership group, has been named president. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The new owners plan to focus initially on food consistency, menu updates, restaurant improvements, birthday parties, and franchisee support. Happy Joe’s will continue to be headquartered in the Quad Cities, where founder Joe Whitty opened the first restaurant in Davenport in 1972.

The brand has 34 U.S. locations and six units in Egypt, according to its website.

“Happy Joe’s has meant something to families in this region for more than fifty years, and that is not something you take lightly,” Araujo said in a statement. “This is a brand people love, and our job is to take great care of it. Great food every visit, restaurants families are proud to bring their kids to, and birthday parties that create the same memories for the next generation that so many of us grew up with. That is where the work starts.”

Food initiatives will address consistency in dough, toppings, and portions across locations. Planned menu updates include new items, family bundles, and lunch options alongside established products such as taco pizza. Whitty introduced the item in 1974, and it continues to be Happy Joe’s best-selling offering.

The ownership group also plans to invest in the company-owned restaurants and expand the brand’s birthday party business. Changes will be introduced over time, with additional announcements on the menu, restaurants, and franchise development expected in the coming months.

For franchisees, the company plans to provide more operator training and clearer store-level reporting.

“Franchise owners are the heart of this brand. They know their markets and their guests better than anyone,” Araujo said. “Our job is to be a franchisor that is engaged, available, and in their corner, so that every Happy Joe’s has what it needs to thrive.”

The ownership group said selecting Araujo was its first decision after reaching an agreement on the acquisition. He has operated restaurants alongside members of the group for a little more than a year and has operating experience across several restaurant brands.

Happy Joe’s operates franchised and company-owned restaurants throughout the Midwest. Its concept combines pizza, ice cream, and family celebrations, a format established when Whitty brought together a pizzeria and an ice cream parlor more than five decades ago.

Kari White, owner of the Happy Joe’s franchise in Clinton, Iowa, welcomed the ownership change.

“Our guests love this brand, and they tell us every day what Happy Joe’s means to their families,” White said in a statement. “That is what I am excited about. Celebrating the original taste and the quality this brand was built on, with a team behind us that is all in. As a franchisee, I am ready to put the Happy back in Joe’s.”

Happy Joe’s was previously operated by Dynamic Restaurant Holdings, which purchased a majority stake in 2017. Five years later, the parent company filed for bankruptcy, blaming COVID and rising costs. The court proceedings only involved corporate locations.
