Rats scurring across the floor of a New York City Taco Bell/KFC restaurant early Friday morning have become the center of a media frenzy.

The footage (www.brightcove.com/title.jsp?title=533258434) shot by local news stations before the restaurant opened shows the rats criss-crossing the floor and even climbing on chairs as on-lookers press against the front glass.

“He’s coming for his close-up,” one bystander told the Associated Press as a rat neared the front window.

“This is completely unacceptable and is an absolute violation of our high standards,” KFC and Taco Bell said in a statement. “This restaurant has been closed and we are addressing the issue with the franchise owner. We will not allow this store to reopen until is it completely resanitized and given a clean bill of health.”

According to Reuters, the Department of Health cited the restaurant for 14 violations including evidence of roaches and mice last March.

Yum Brands, Inc., which owns Taco Bell and KFC, saw its shares drop 1 percent at $60.45 this morning.
