While Buffalo, New York, is better known for its chicken wings and snow than its healthy food, four local food trucks will compete to put “healthy” on the city’s mobile menus. BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York will host a Healthy Food Truck Challenge at the Buffalo Winterfest and Powder Keg Festival.
The contest will take place among four popular food trucks on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 3 to 4 p.m. outside Statler City’s Terrace Room. A panel of local celebrity judges will be on-hand to sample dishes created from recipes that contain fewer than 500 calories.
The following food trucks will participate in the BlueCross BlueShield Healthy Food Truck Challenge:
“Food trucks have become a favorite dining option for many people in downtown Buffalo,” says Gretchen Fierle, vice president and chief communications officer of BlueCross BlueShield. “The Healthy Food Truck Challenge promotes the idea that you don’t have to sacrifice taste to enjoy healthy local food in Buffalo.”
The food entries will be judged on appearance, originality, flavor and taste, and healthiness. The menu items must align with the style of cuisine the food truck typically serves, since the items may be permanently added to the menus.
BlueCross BlueShield will grant the winning food truck “Healthy Zone” approval, designating it a place to find healthy dining options.
The panel of celebrity judges includes: Dr. Derek Alessi and Chef Binks of The Healthy Zone show on WGRZ-TV; Andrew Peters, former Buffalo Sabre; Gretchen Fierle; and a lucky audience member selected at 3 p.m. to join the judging panel. Drew Cerza, of Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival fame, will serve as emcee.
